Dust Warfare! June 2012

No league play this weekend, but Nicholas and I played a long game of Warfare. We decided on a single 200 point platoon for each player on a 4’ x 4’ table. We originally intended to play for 8 rounds, but called the game after round 5 due to how late the game was running (roughly an hour per round).

  • Objective: Eliminate the Enemy
  • Conditions: Secured Area
  • Deployment: Advancing Lines

Nicholas’ Axis Army:
  • Kommandotrupp
  • Laser Grenadiers
  • Axis Gorillas
  • Recon Grenadiers
  • Heavy Recon Grenadiers
  • Sniper Grenadiers
  • Hans LPW
  • Hans LPW
  • Anglea
Justin’s Allied Army:

  • Ranger Command Squad
  • Combat Ranger Squad
  • Heavy Ranger Assault Squad
  • Ranger Weapon Squad
  • Assault Ranger Squad
  • Observer Team
  • Sniper Team
  • Steel Rain MCW
  • The Priest

Superiority Points:
  • Nicholas: 5 Points
  • Justin: 4 Points
Victory:
  • Nicholas with 5 superiority points
This game definitely took way too long to play. The Condition of Secured Area was new to both of us and definitely slowed things down. I also attribute the excessively long duration of play to lots of measuring, pre-measuring, re-measuring, trying to determine LOS, such a small paying surface, etc… These are some of my least favorite aspects of table top gaming, and a large contributing factor to why I left similar games in my past. The minefields were also a contributing factor in slowing the game down.

The Axis won the first two initiatives and made good use of the Blitzkrieg order to position the gorillas and the unlimited range indirect fire capabilities of the Hans LPW. Not to mention the indirect fire from a Granatwerfer ignores cover! The Allies took up position behind the main building, but a minefield located in the doorway of the opposite side limited its usefulness as a safe staging area. Angela’s 36” range also did much in covering the center of the map, damaging the Steel Rain to one-half health early in the game, and eliminating two out of three of the Heavy Ranger Assault Squad. The Allied Command Squad spent a majority of the game healing their units, and issuing regroup orders to keep a heavily suppressed and hurt Combat Ranger Squad from retreating off the board.

Turn 3 and 4 saw the initiative fall to the Allies. The Gorilla’s fell to the Combat Ranger Squad when they attempted to approach the Steel Rain from the roof of the main building. Angela and her Sniper Grenadiers traded some blows, and damage with Preist and his Assault Ranger Squad. In an attempt to finish off the hurt Priest and Assault Ranger Squad, she missed entirely!! The response from the Allied unit drew the same result!! Two major hitters with a chance to finish each other off with minimal damage, and one with an inverted die roll, came up empty!!

Eventually the Steel Rain fell to reactive fire from Angela, but the Steel Rain was able to finish off the Sniper Grenadiers. The Laser Grenadiers made a dash up the middle, through a dummy minefield, and took some fire from the Steel Rain before it fell, and was finished off by the Gunner Rangers, before they fell to the Heavy Recon Grenadiers. The Priest sacrificed himself for the sake of the Assault Ranger Squad, and a fully healed Heavy Ranger Assault Squad took the fight to the Axis in a last ditch attempt to eliminate a Hans and finish off the Recon Grenadiers. In the final turn, the Ranger Command Squad concentrated all of their fire onto Angela to at least get some revenge for their fallen brothers. Her hard cover and armor were not enough to keep the final hit from getting through to eliminate Angela from the battle.

It was a long game, but I did still have a lot of fun. There are many aspects of this game that I like very much. Tank Killer weapons, Artillery not ignoring cover, Armor 2 Zombies, Snipers ignoring cover, Blackhawk with a good range, and a few others. Both factions seem balanced with unique and exciting options.

After looking at the battle I realized we did a few things incorrectly, which greatly changed some decisions and the course of the game.

  • Reactions are limited to 12”. Angela’s reaction on the Steel Rain was from about 34” away, and ended up eliminating the unit with the help of the Spotter, who was eliminated in the Attack. Angela shouldn’t have been able to fire until her unit phase, where she would have been without the benefit of a Spotter!
  • Close Combat differs greatly from a standard attack. They cannot be done simultaneously. Either a unit uses its ranged weapons OR its Close Combat Weapons. Units cannot “move” react to a Close Combat Attack. Units may only react to a Close Combat attack with Close Combat Weapons.
  • The Steel Rain’s Petard Mortar is an indirect fire weapon, but still limited to 24”. Much strategy was planned around the weapon being unlimited range when fired indirectly, much like the Hans’ Granatwerfer.
  • There is no Command Pool die available for a Hero that is attached to a unit.
  • Block Line Of Sight versus Obscured Line Of Sight. Soldiers don’t actually block or obscure L.O.S. for Vehicles, and only obscure L.O.S. for Soldiers. It also seems that a Defender will always gain the benefit of cover as long as they are obscured by terrain in between an attacking unit and a defending unit’s base, regardless if they are actually in the terrain.

I look forward to future games and exploring different strategies. There are many different options and combinations to try before I can make a full review and fair assessment of Dust Warfare. I hope my satisfaction with the game will increase with each experience. Good Gaming!!

Dust Tactics League Play!! 06-03-2012 - PLUS: Unit Card update!!

This week our group decided to check out OtherWorlds Games. The staff members were very accommodating and helpful. They also showed a great interest in the game and a hope for some demand in the near future. In the near future we will have a few weekends of demos that will hopefully bring new players to the group.

Also, check out the unit card tab to see nearly every new card for the upcoming second wave of SSU units, as well as the new Axis and Allied medium walkers!!

Scenario 7, Destruction:

Justin v. John

  • Attacker:
    Justin - Allies: 250 points
Action Jackson - OZZ-177 - The Chef - Bot Hunters - Corps Officers - Grim Reapers - Hell Boys - Red Devils - Mickey
  • Defender:
    John - Allies: 250
Bazooka Joe - Rhino - BBQ Squad - Death Dealers - Grim Reapers - Tank Busters - The Boss - The Hammers - Mickey
Long story short on this battle. Justin made a gutsy move on Turn 2 and it didn't pay off. The Bot Hunters and Corps Officers were the only units Justin had left on the table at the beginning of Turn 4. John had only lost Bazooka Joe and his BBQ Squad by this point in the game. Very short and sweet.

Victor: John - Allies

Victory Points:
  • Attacker: 250 points
  • Defender: 74 points

John v. Nicholas
  • Attacker:
    John - Allies: 250 points
Bazooka Joe - Rhino - BBQ Squad - Death Dealers - Grim Reapers - Tank Busters - The Boss - The Hammers - Mickey
  • Defender:
    Nicholas - Axis: 249 points
Grenadier X - Lara - Manfred - Markus - Totenmeister - Axis Gorillas - Axis Zombies - Axis Zombies - Heavy Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers
This game was very back and forth. Turn 2 saw the Axis loose a squad of Recon Grenadiers and Markus with his Axis Gorillas. The Allies lost Rhino and his Grim Reapers, while the Axis lost Manfred and his Recon Grenadiers in Turn 3. Turn 4 saw the favor swing to the Axis a bit when The Allies lost Joe and his BBQ Squad along with the Tank Busters. The Axis Zombies and the Mickey were very stubborn and hard to kill, but Turn 5 finally saw the end of both units, though Totenmeister would continue to be a nuisance all the way into Turn 7. The Death Dealers also fell in Turn 5, while a revived Grim Reaper unit and The Hammers were able to hold out until Turn 7. At this point the game was called as The Allies had no way to reach the objective tile and both players units were out of range and could not move into range of each other by the end of turn 8.

Victor: Nicholas - Axis

Victory Points:
  • Attacker: 147 points
  • Defender: 236 points

The next two games were really supposed to be a single game to determine who would face John’s SSU forces for our battle report. We played the first mission out of Zverograd to ensure a quick game. It was on small map being 5 squares deep and 6 squares wide. We played the scenario twice due to Nicholas taking Totenmeister and Zombies in a 100 point army and some debates on placement rules.

  • Justin’s 100 point Allied Army:
Hell Boys - Johnny One-Eye - Gunner Rangers - Recon Boys - Recon Boys
  • Nicholas’ 97 point Axis Army:
Totenmeister - Axis Zombies - Sniper Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers

In the first game Nicholas eliminated both squads of Recon Boys in the first turn. In Turn 3 Totenmeister finished off Johnny and his squad of Gunner Rangers, as well as the Hell Boys. Armor 3 and Damage Resilient Zombies are tough to kill

The second game saw a bit more balance. It really came down to initiative at the end of the game. Turn 2 saw Nicholas eliminate both units of Recon Boys, as well as the Hell Boys, however Justin was able to eliminate the Totenmeister and the Axis Zombies in the same turn. Turn 3 saw the Sniper Grenadiers fall and some serious damage dealt to both squads of Recon Grenadiers. Turn 4 saw the Axis pull the upper hand with winning initiative and finishing off Johnny and his Gunner Rangers.

Nicholas won both games and would be taking on John’s SSU forces! We used scenario 3 from Operation Zverograd for this battle. There were 3 objectives of which the Attacker must hold 2 of by the end of turn 8. Nicholas’s Axis Army were attacking in this scenario. A full battle report will appear in the new Dust Fanzine! Stay tuned for more information!

  • John’s 197 point SSU Army:
Grand’ma - Koshka - Command Squad - Close Combat Squad - Battle Squad - Chinese Volunteers - Airborne Transport
  • Nicholas’ 200 point Axis Army:Lara - Heavy Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Heinrich - Heinrich - Stefan - Sturmpioniere
At the end of turn 8 Nicholas had 2 objectives, and obtained the victory.

Victory Points:
  • Nicholas - Axis: 163 Points
  • John - SSU: 45 Points
We will be back at Other Worlds Games on Sunday the 17th of June then to Red Castle Games on the 24th of June. Good Gaming!!

Dust Tactics League Play!! 05-27-2012

We took a break this weekend from the Gaming Store environment to enjoy some laid back games. We are still looking for a new Gaming Store to call home for our league, but Red Castle Games is high on the list since we already familiar with the environment and staff. With any luck we'll have a West side and East side location to increase our exposure and player pool!

So this week we finished up the Blue Thunder v2.0 Scenarios 5 and 6, Intrusion and Descent, respectively. Afterwards we placed some terrain and played 2 games of Dust Warfare! This time we were more familiar with the rules and had a much better experience with the game.

Scenario 5, Intrusion:

Justin v. John
  • Attacker:
    Justin - ALLIES: 250 points
Bazooka Joe - Action Jackson - The Chef - Red Devils - Hell Boys - Hell Boys - The Boss - Wildfire - Wildfire
  • Defender:
    John - AXIS: 251 points
Lara - Sigrid - Stefan - Heavy Flak Grenadiers - Heavy Recon Grenadiers - Laser Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Sniper Grenadiers - Sturmpioniere - Heinrich - Luther
The Axis decided to defend 2 of the objectives in this scenario, leaving the third open for the Allies to gain. Turn 3 saw an Assault move from Stefan and his Sturmpioniere's to attack Chef and his unit of Hell Boys and dealt a decent amount of damage leaving Chef and the two flamethrowers alive. Before the end of turn 3 the Heavy Recon Grenadiers were able to position themselves to fire on the Boss Squad, fully eliminating that unit. In turn 4 the Allies were able to get some revenge with Chef and his remaining Flamethrowers eliminating Stefan and his Sturmpioniere squad. The Red Devils fell to the Heavy Recon Grenadiers, leaving Action Jackson barely alive to continue the fight. The Sniper Grenadiers also saw their end in turn 4. The Heavy Flak Grenadiers were eliminated at the beginning of Turn 5 when the Wildfire unleashed a sustained attack. Sigrid made an attempt to get into position to hurt Joe and his Hell Boys, but the plan backfired when the Joe and his squad were able to retaliate and eliminate the Laser Grenadiers, and seriously hurt Sigrid. The Heavy Recon Grenadiers were also eliminated, leaving a severely hurt Lara behind. In Turn 6 the Axis started to position their walkers around the last remaining objective to prevent the Allies from winning the scenario before turn 8. Lara was able to get an attack off on Action Jackson, eliminating the Hero in the process. The Allies exacted their revenge by eliminating Sigrid, Lara, and the Recon Grenadier before the end of Turn 6. The Luther opened up Turn 7 by taking shots at Chef and his Hell Boys, and successfully killed the hero, but left one flamethrower alive which retaliated with it's own attack to destroy the Walker, and opening a path to the objective. Joe and his Hell Boys were able to accomplish the same goal by eliminating the Heinrich Light Walker before Turn 7 was over. The Allied units had just enough movement points with Joe and his Hell Boys to move into the objective and win the scenario at the last possible second!

Victor: Justin - Allies

Victory Points:
  • Attacker: 251 points
  • Defender: 114 points

John v. Nicholas
  • Attacker:
    John - AXIS: 251 points
Lara - Sigrid - Stefan - Heavy Flak Grenadiers - Heavy Recon Grenadiers - Laser Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Sniper Grenadiers - Sturmpioniere -Heinrich - Luther

  • Defender:
    Nicholas - AXIS: 249 points
    Grenadier X - Totenmeister - Manfred - Markus - Axis Gorillas - Axis Zombies - Axis Zombies -  Sturmpioniere - Heinrich - Heinrich
The action in this game was off to a quick start! Turn 2 saw Nicholas' Totenmeister and Axis Zombie combination eliminate Stefan and his Sturmpioniere's!! Though John's Axis units were able to respond to and eliminate the Totenmeister's Zombies before the end of the turn, leaving the hero all alone on the battlefield. Turn 3 saw John finish off Totenmeister, but at the cost of Lara and the Heavy Recon Grenadiers. Nicholas charged Markus and his Axis Gorillas up to the Luther, and successfully eliminated the unit. This action did result in the Axis Gorillas falling to John's firepower, but the turn came to an end with Grenadier X and his Zombies eliminating Sigrid and her Laser Grenadiers. At this point John called the game since he had no chance to reach the objectives by the end of turn 8.

Victor: Nicholas - Axis

Victory Points:
  • Attacker: 79 points
  • Defender: 174points

Scenario 6, Descent:

Nicholas v. John
  • Attacker:
    Nicholas - AXIS: 246 points
Grenadier X - Totenmeister - Lara - Markus - Axis Gorillas - Axis Zombies - Axis Zombies - Heavy Recon Grenadiers - Kommandotrupp - Beobachter
  • Defender:
    John - ALLIES: 250 points
Rhino - The Priest - BBQ Squad - Death Dealers - Grim Reapers - Tank Busters - The Hammers - Mickey - Pounder
John decided that the Axis weren't doing their job, so he switched to the Allies! Descent is a very intense scenario and the action was off to a quick start! Turn 1 saw the end of the Axis Gorillas, but at the cost of the Allied Pounder, The Death Dealers, and The Grim Reapers. Turn 2 saw Markus eliminated in the first turn, but that left a path for Grenadier X and his Zombies to make a move on Rhino and his Hammers, who dealt a great amount of damage, but were completely eliminated by the undead squad. This left an opportunity for the Mickey to get some kills in Turn 3 when the Walker unloaded its guns to eliminate Grenadier X and his Zombies with a Beobacther unit. The Priest fell before the end of the turn, sacrificing his life to keep the remaining BBQ Squad flamethrower alive. The Heavy Recon Grenadiers finished off the BBQ Rangers and eliminated the Tank Busters in Turn 4. The Mickey stepped up in turn 5 by eliminated Totenmeister's undead unit, and leaving the undead leader on her last leg. By this point the Allies were very close to having the game won. The Kommandotrupp, Lara, and the Heavy Recon Grenadiers did not have any method to destroy the Allied walker. The task fell to Totenmeister, and in Turn 7 she was able to move into position to put the killing blow on the semi-damaged walker, thereby securing victory for the Axis.

Victor: Nicholas - Axis

Victory Points:
  • Attacker: 250 points
  • Defender: 135 points

John v. Justin
  • Attacker:
    John - ALLIES: 250 points
Rhino - The Priest - BBQ Squad - Death Dealers - Grim Reapers - Tank Busters - The Hammers - Mickey - Pounder

  • Defender:
    Justin - ALLIES: 248 points
Bazooka Joe - Johnny One Eye - The Chef - Rhino - Ozz 117 - Grim Reapers -  Grim Reapers -  Crack Shots - Hell Boys - Recon Boys - Mickey
This was an intense Allied battle! Turn 2 saw both armies loose Rhino and his squad (Grim Reapers for Justin, The Hammers for John). Justin also lost his Mickey in turn 2, where John lost his Pounder and the solo squad of Grim Reapers. Turn 3 saw John's Death Dealers eliminate Justin's combination of Johnny and his Recon Rangers, but the cost was dear with the loss of John's Priest and BBQ Squad, in addition to the Tank Busters from Justin's attack on John's flank. The Game came to and end in Turn 4 when Ozz and his Grim Reapers were able to finish off both the Pounder and Death Dealers in their activation.

Victor: Justin - Allies

Victory Points:
  • Attacker: 114 points
  • Defender: 250 points

Dust Tactics League Play!! 05-20-2012

Congratulations to Nicholas Gyore for winning Second Place, and a Premium Loth Medium Panzer Walker, at the Regional event in Olympia last weekend!! A great representation of our small, but dominating presence in the DUST World!

Our return to league play found us without a Local Gaming Store!! Knightfall Games in Beaverton has closed it's doors. Many thanks to Christopher Slovick for being such a great host and providing the birthplace for the PDX Dust League. Best of luck in your future endeavors!

Additionally we were short a player, but were still able to get 3 games completed in 3 hours at Red Castle Games in SE Portland. We hope that this will be a new home for our league. The staff are very accommodating and the store supports a great diversity of gaming.

Scenario 7, Destruction:

Nicholas v. Justin
  • Attacker:
    Nicholas - Axis: 249 points
Grenadier X - Lara - Manfred - Markus - Totenmeister - Axis Gorillas - Axis Zombies - Axis Zombies - Heavy Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers
  • Defender:
    Justin - Allies: 250 points
Action Jackson - OZZ-177 - The Chef - Bot Hunters - Corps Officers - Grim Reapers - Hell Boys - Red Devils - Mickey
This was a great display of Axis Might! The action began in Turn 3 with Grenadier X and his Zombies eliminating the Bot Hunters. The Allies were able to place Chef and his Hell Boys in a great position to eliminate Markus and the Gorillas, but the elimination of that unit also brought an open line of sight for Lara and her Heavy Recon Grenadiers to get what can be considered the game winning kill early in the scenario. At this point it was pretty much just the Allies trying to score as many kills as possible before loosing the scenario. Manfred and his squad of Recon Grenadiers fell in Turn 4, but so did the Allied Mickey. Turn 5 saw the end of Grenadier X and his squad of undead soldiers, however it also saw the end of every Allied unit on the table and a clean victory since the Axis were able to move into the objective by the end of the round.
Victor: Nichols - Axis

Victory Points:
  • Attacker: 250 points
  • Defender: 100 points

Scenario 8, Destruction:
Justin v. Nicholas
  • Attacker:
    Justin - Allies: 250 points
OZZ-177 - Bazooka Joe - The Priest - BBQ Squad - Corps Officers - Grim Reapers - Hell Boys - Recon Boys - Recon Boys - Mickey
  • Defender:
    Nicholas - Axis: 249 points
Grenadier X - Lara - Manfred - Markus - Totenmeister - Axis Gorillas - Axis Zombies - Axis Zombies - Heavy Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers
Once again turn 3 is where the action began and the Allies took heavy losses. The BBQ Rangers, OZZ and his Grim Reapers, the Mickey, and a squad of Recon Boys all fell. The Axis player was able to figure out the Allied strategy and struck quickly with devastating results. Granted the Allies did score a great amount of damage in return, but just not enough to eliminate enough units and punch a hole in the defensive line. The Allies made a bold move in Turn 3 and positioned Priest and his BBQ Squad in position to potentially eliminate 2 full squads of Axis units. After winning the turn 4 initiative the Allied player struck and was able to eliminate a squad of Zombies, severely damage Grenadier X, and fully eliminate Manfred and his Recon Grenadiers. Lara and her Heavy Recon Grenadiers retaliated and split their fire to eliminate Priest and his BBQ Squad as well as the second squad of Recon Boys. Turn 5 saw a little Allied revenge in the form of the elimination of the second squad of Recon Grenadiers before the Corps Officers and Bazooka Joe met their end. This was actually a great game and even though it looks like the Axis just walked over the Allies it actually played out in a completely different way. The Axis took enough damage in round 3 to cause concern and a little doubt on who might win the scenario. If just one or two dice fell differently for the Allies the game would have gone a completely different direction. One of the aspects that I absolutely love about this game!

Victor: Nicholas - Axis
Victory Points:
  • Attacker:  103 points
  • Defender: 250 points

Scenario 9, The Race To Victory:
Nicholas v. Justin
  • Attacker:
    Nicholas - Axis: 299 points
Grenadier X - Lara - Manfred - Markus - Totenmeister - Axis Gorillas - Axis Zombies - Axis Zombies - Heavy Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Recon Grenadiers - Heavy Kommandotrupp - Beobachter - Sniper Grenadiers
  • Defender:
    Justin - Allies: 300 points
    Bazooka Joe - Johnny One-Eye - OZZ-177 - Rhino - Crack Shots - Grim Reapers - Grim Reapers - The Gunners - The Gunners - Mickey - Mickey - Wildfire - Wildfire
This is a difficult battle for an Attacker to win. The objective was to escape units of the Defenders side of the board, however the Defender has excellent placement options to counter the Attackers progress. The is very little cover for the Attacker to use on their approach and the only cover elements available to place are 2 Ammo Crates. The Attacker gains points for kills and double points for escaping a unit, which can allow for massive points provided the Attacker has units that not only score kills, but also have the survivability to escape the map.

The action was off to a quick start as a Mickey was able to eliminate the Axis Gorillas and severely wound Markus in the first turn. Turn 2 saw a quick end to OZZ and his Grim Reapers at the Hands of Totenmeister and her undead soldiers. The Allies were able to counter with a quick attack from a Mickey to finish off Markus and wear down Manfred and his Recon Grenadiers. By the end of turn 2 the Allies were able to finish off Manfred and his Recon Grenadiers, eliminate a squad of Zombies, wound Totenmeister, and score some wounds on Grenadier X and his Zombies, who were hiding in a smoke mortar cloud to avoid fire from the Mickey's and Wildfire. Turn 3 was the bloodiest of the scenario with the Axis loosing their Sniper Grenadiers, Totenmeister, the solo Recon Grenadiers, the Beobachters, Lara, and Grenadier X along with his undead soldiers. The Axis spent turns 4 and 5 attempting to advance towards the objective tiles, while the Allies were positioning to finish off the remaining Axis units. The Axis were able to eliminate a Wildfire in Turn 6, but the Allies were able to counter and finish off the Heavy Recon Grenadiers and Heavy Kommandotrupp to gain the victory.

Victor: Justin - Allies
Victory Points:
  • Attacker: 74 points
  • Defender: 299 points

We hope to be back with more League Play in 2 weeks with a new location. We are looking around Portland to hopefully find 2 gaming stores that we can split our time between in the coming months. We
